Our students make a difference!

I am so proud of our students who have participated in community service projects and activities this year.  Our students and staff have donated almost $1,000 to March of Dimes, collected 4,000 canned food items for the needy, and conducted a bloodmobile that collected 160 pints of blood for the America Red Cross.  There are so many more community service projects to mention.  However, our students and staff should feel real good about their accomplishments of helping our 800 square mile community. Congratulations!!

They're coming and going

What an exciting month of hosting Sophomore Visitations on November 30th through December 2nd, plus an Open House for the sophomores and parents of our Partner Schools on December 2nd.  We opened our labs and classrooms for all to visit and to get a taste of how EHOVE can be a part of their future. We would like to thank the guidance counselors and support staff from our partner schools for all their assistance and cooperation during this important activity.

During this time, current EHOVE students took part in several career exploration activities. During the 3 days, students attended workshops on how to get a job, finances, and health and wellness.  Students could have also job shadowed, worked for their current employer, participated in a community service project with a non-profit organization, and/or made college visits.

Sophomores Career and Community Days

We are very excited for the Career and Community Days we have planned for our current students from November 30th – December 2nd while sophomores are visiting our campus. Our students will have the opportunity to enhance their experiences by choosing from a variety of activities on each of those days. They may choose work experience, college visits, or attend any of the workshops we have planned that will involve guest speakers, hands-on activities, small group discussions, etc.. We are confident that our students will really be pleased with the outcomes of their choices.

Wrapping up November

As we entered the month of November, we have had another busy month. In preparation for next school year, EHOVE Guidance Counselors and Student Ambassadors made visits to our partner schools and met with all sophomores. Sophomores will be making visits to EHOVE from November 30th – December 2nd. On December 2nd, the EHOVE staff will host sophomores and their parents as they visit EHOVE for tours of the campus, giving them an opportunity to see what we have to offer.

It's already November?

October was a very busy month at EHOVE. We hosted over 1600 8th grade students from our 16 partner schools during EHOVE’s annual 8th Grade Career Fair. Students had the opportunity to visit many career tech labs and academic classrooms during the guided tours.

The community really came together on October 10th at EHOVE’s Community Open House. The warm, sunny weather brought the owners of over 90 specialty cars for the car show. Sixteen high school and adult graduates were inducted into the Gallery of Success. Their families and instructors joined us for the induction ceremony. Over 600 people visited our campus to enjoy a relaxing day of visiting our labs and classrooms as well as socializing over brunch.

On October 15th we hosted over 400 parents and family members during Pastries for Parents. The EHOVE cafeteria staff prepared a variety of pastries and refreshments for all those in attendance. Parents were able to tour the campus, followed by an opportunity to visit their student’s career tech lab. It is always reassuring when you have so many parents actively involved in their child’s education. We tell our students and parents, creating a rewarding, successful high school experience for any student is a true team effort. Thanks for all the support parents!

Out and about

EHOVE Guidance Counselors will be out with our Student Ambassadors at our Partner Schools to share with sophomores the opportunities EHOVE has to offer them in their future. I am very proud of our Student Ambassadors who are taking the lead role in sharing their stories about how EHOVE has helped them prepare for their future.

I want to thank everyone who attended our Community Open House on October 10th. It was a huge success with over 600 visitors on our campus to see what EHOVE has to offer the 16 school districts and 800 square mile community we serve. It was great to see positive community spirit and social time with students, staff, and community members.

Conferences and end of the first nine weeks - already!

As we approach the end of the 1st Nine Week Grading Period, I encourage students to stay focused and parents to support their children in any way to improve grades. Ending the first grading period on a high note will help carry that momentum for the rest of the year.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on October 19th and 21st from 3:30-6:30 PM.  This is an important opportunity to speak with teachers/instructors about the performance of your student and to have a serious discussion about the partnership for success. It is our goal to develop a strong partnership with all parents/guardians. We understand the importance of how that positive partnership can guide the success of students. Please plan to attend to build that partnership even stronger.

EHOVE is a part of our community

To continue our commitment of providing a valuable education and community service, our Carpentry, Electricity, Public Safety Academy and other programs have projects going on throughout our community. There is no better experience to prepare our students for the workforce than hands-on projects. We are proud of all of our programs and the services they provide for our community.

The school year is off to a positive start

Students are actively engaged in their programs, taking full advantage of what EHOVE has to offer. Our high school enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year is up approximately 7.5 percent from the previous year.

September has been a busy month on campus.  It is exceptionally exciting at EHOVE right now with the projects our students in various programs are planning, coordinating, and carrying out to better our community and environment.  I had the pleasure of hearing several recycling and collection proposals we will conduct at EHOVE from the students in the Green Science Technology program.  Items to be collected for recycling include plastic caps, cell phones, and other electronic devices.  Shoes will also be collected to donate to those in need in Haiti.

You can win!

Always keep your goals in mind and what you must do to reach those goals. We will do what we have to do to help you reach those goals, but we need your help.

We have provided an incentive program for perfect attendance. Everyone has the opportunity to win prizes weekly, quarterly, at the semester, and at the end of the year.

The prizes get bigger as the year goes on. Do not give up because you missed a day or two. Every week is a new opportunity to win!

Get involved!

I encourage each of you to get involved in our Career Tech Student Organizations as well as the activities at your home school. Our student organizations will enhance your learning and leadership for your future. These organizations were very competitive this past year at the state level and competed nationally in Kansas City. We want to take our students to the national level and show the rest of the competing schools who we are and what we are made of. Think of the experiences!!

To all of our students: Welcome to the EHOVE family!!

I am very pleased with the opening days of our school year. What a tremendous group of students we have here at EHOVE this year. I enjoyed meeting and talking to many of you in class or at lunch.

The summer is over, but for me that means the opportunity to spend this year helping students prepare for their futures. This is the biggest joy for me and the rest of the EHOVE family. We are all looking for the senior leadership in our school. Step up as a role model and make good decisions.

I want to wish each of you the best of luck in your preparation for your future and know that we support you in your preparation. See you on the stage at graduation!!

A Fresh Start

On behalf of everyone at EHOVE Career Center, I would like to welcome you to the EHOVE family. I look forward to sharing with all of our stakeholders a monthly update as to what is happening on campus. We have several new staff members joining the EHOVE high school team for the 2010-11 school year.

I would like to welcome Dale VanLerberghe as the new Assistant Principal, Erika Beckman as an Assistant Director, Brenda Ruffing as a science teacher, Vicky Mahl as the Exercise Science instructor, Sean Heath as an Intervention Specialist, Marcia Herbkersman as an Intervention Specialist, and Chuck Livermore and Dick Starcher as the Manufacturing Tech I instructors.

Along with new staff, we are excited to have several new offerings for the upcoming year. EHOVE will now offer Exercise Science, Forensics, and Green Science Technology. The creation of these new programs is a direct reflection for the economic need in our area of service (800 square miles). We will also be embedding science credits into Exercise Science, Green Science Technology, and EMT programs. The embedded credit we are offering will allow students to earn a science credit at the same time they are earning their lab credits. Therefore, this opens up more opportunities for our students to earn more credit toward an honors diploma and ultimately toward graduation.

I would like to thank all the parents and students for their cooperation during student registration held on July 27th and 28th. It was nice to see so many families take the time to meet staff and view the campus. I enjoyed meeting the newest EHOVE family members.

Our job at EHOVE is to teach and prepare our students for what they will experience when they graduate. One of those lessons is proper etiquette and use of cell phones and other electronic devices. Therefore, we have changed our policy to allow cell phones/electronic devices on campus. These items will not be allowed in the classroom, unless the instructor designates their use for educational purposes.

As the new principal, I look forward to working with our parents, guardians and partner schools as we provide a positive educational experience for the students of EHOVE. If I can answer a question or address a concern, please feel free to contact me at 419-499-4663 ext 230 or by email at rsmith@ehove.net.

Respectfully,

Rod Smith
